Man is a spirit. With the spirit, we are aware of God, spirit beings (angels, demons), and spiritual activity.
Man has a soul. With the soul man can think, reason, learn, make decisions.
Man lives in a body. The body can see, hear, touch, taste, and smell his earthly environment.
“And may the God of peace Himself sanctify you through and through; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved sound and complete and found blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah).” ~1Thessalonians 5:23
“spirit” = “pneuma” – also translated “wind”
“soul” = “psuche” – includes the mind, will and emotions
“body” = “soma”
“Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit” – Galatians 5:25.
Man’s original state in the Garden of Eden, before the Fall, was one of perfect union and fellowship with God. God designed man to be led by his spirit, not driven by his environment.
Man was intended to live through spiritual discernment, not physical senses.
But when Adam (the first man) disobeyed God, he destroyed his fellowship and communion with the Spirit of God (see Gen. 3).
The consequence was death. This death is isolation from the spirit world of God. Through disobedience, man’s spirit lost contact with the Source of Heaven.
As a result, man became a victim of his soul (mind, will, emotions) and his body (five senses).
His life became governed by his external environment as his five senses controlled his existence.
The relationship between man and his environment gave birth to humanistic philosophy.
Man started living and interpreting his existence according to the information he gained through the senses of his body, instead of the revelation received through his spirit from the Spirit of God.
This change has caused man to limit his potential ability to the capabilities of his senses and his physical body.
We are designed to know God our Creator, have conversation with Him, be guided and directed by His higher purpose for our lives. A call to pay more attention to Him, tune in to Heaven’s wavelength!
